NZ Tour: Dannevirke

Portrait of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik of Denmark at Dannevirke town hall.

On our way from Napier to Wellington, we had lunch in a small town called Dannevirke. As the name suggests, it has something to do with the Danes. Dannevirke was established by Danish, Norwegian and Swedish settlers in 1872. It is amazing how far these Scandinavians came in search of their luck. Today not much of the Scandinavian heritage remain, we could not find even a Danish smørrebrød restaurant! Despite that, they have a portrait of the Danish monarch and her spouse and the Danish flag on top of the town hall.
